Bastiaan is a Master from the Netherlands who finished the Open 15th in the World (40-44). An injury meant the qualifiers didn’t go as planned but he’s on the road to recovery and would love to throwdown with you this year!

How old are you, Bastiaan?

I am 41 years old.


How long have you been doing CrossFit and where do you train?

In June I will have been doing CrossFit for 6 years.



What are the other commitments in your life?

My family and our box CrossFit Apeldoorn.


What keeps you coming back for more?

The fact I keep improving and there is always something that I can do better. Besides that I have to be fit to keep up with my son, he is now 7 years old and loves sports.

What achievements are you most proud of?

Finishing on the podium is always something special and something to be proud of. Last year I did two events outside the Open. I won The French Throwdown and finished 2nd place at the Lowlands Throwdown. At the start of this year I won The Greek Throwdown.


How have the Open / Qualifiers been for you?

The Open was very successful. I didn’t start strong with event 1 but the other 4 events were up my street. I finished in 15th place worldwide. After the Open I was sick for two weeks and my knee injury played up. Something I had been struggling with since last year before The French Throwdown. Due to my injury the qualifier did not go as I wanted and that was a big disappointment!

What are your strengths?

I am pretty much an all-rounder and even though  I don’t like the idea of a long workout these are usually my best workouts as I can keep a good pace for a long time.


What are your weaknesses?

My pure strength is something I always have to work hard on.


What are your goals for 2017 now the Open is over?


When the Open and the online qualifier were done I really wanted to compete at The French Throwdown to defend my title and also to compete with some of the best in Europe. But I had to be smart and take a step back. I am resting my body and recovering from my knee injury. This will take some time, but don’t worry I am still training just at other stuff.

This year I want to compete at the Lowlands Throwdown which is the biggest event in the Netherlands, so hopefully a lot of you masters will compete here too. At the end of the year I would like to do another big Throwdown, so let me know if there is an event I can’t miss!



Who does your programming?


The last year and a half Tino from CrossFit Invictus did my programming. At the moment I do my own programming and I do the exercises my physio tells me to do for my recovery.

What advice would you give to a Master just starting out in CrossFit?


Start twice a week in a gym that not only programs 12 to 30 min workouts. Know why you start training and don’t let your ego distract that. Enjoy the journey!


What’s the key to effective recovery for you?

Make sure you sleep enough, Magnesium from Go Primal helps me to sleep deeper so it is definitely a must have!

What would you advise CrossFitters to stop doing? What should they start (if they aren’t already!)?

What would you advise CrossFitters to stop doing? Stop doing too much fancy stuff and focus on the basics and the fancy stuff will follow!
