Ryan is a 35 year old Master who is obsessed with handstand walks and coffee (just not at the same time). He’s excited to be mixing his day job with his passion for fitness and coffee in his latest venture: Intensus Coffee. (He’s praying for a handstand obstacle course in the 2018 Open!).
What’s your name and how old are you?
Ryan Hadley, 35.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and where do you train?
I’ve known about Crossfit for about 4 years but I picked up my first proper barbell at the functional Gym Fitness Worx in Warwick and Kenilworth about 3 years ago. Before that I was mainly training for obstacle racing. I’m an occasional drop in at boxes but I mostly do Crossfit by myself.
What are the other commitments in your life?
Full time work as a head of design at an advertising agency, mixed media artist and Co owner of a coffee brand along side looking after 2 boys under 5 and a lovely wife!
What keeps you coming back for more?
It’s never the same and so goal driven. You can get the feeling of competition and winning all by yourself before work on a Wednseday because you PB’d your Fran time or maxed out your clean and jerk.
What achievements are you most proud of?
Competing in 2 Spartan Race Beasts and finishing in the top 60 2 years running in the first two years after we had our first child (no dad bod here!). But I am by far the most proud of helping my wife deliver our second child by ourselves on our bedroom floor – definitely tougher than both races combined.
How was the Open for you this year?
Best one yet as I managed to complete all 5 workouts – finding the time each week is tricky! I surprised myself in the first 3 workouts and disappointed myself in the last 2!
What are your strengths?
Handstand walking! I’m obsessed with being upside down. Once I’d taken my first steps I was hooked. I’m very excited to see the obstacle walks at the invitational as I’ve been climbing steps for a while now! Bring it on in the open!
What are your weaknesses?
Bench press/powerlifting in general. It just doesn’t excite me like the Olympic lifting or gymnastic skills! Ben and Jerrys.
What are your current goals?
100kg Snatch 120kg Clean while being able to run a 40min 10k and getting a press to handstand off the floor. Getting there slowly!
Who does your programming?
I follow a lot of Weightling101 when it comes to lifting but other than that I just program based on weaknesses I’ve spotted or movements I’ve not done recently. If I’m honest just what I feel like! Youtube and instagram are big inspiration.
Can we find you on social media?
Who do you follow on social media that you’d recommend to others?
@zackgeorge he will be at regionals next year! (Follow if you want EMOMs that might make you cry)
What supplements do you swear by?
BCAAS, OATS and COFFEE! Quorn cocktail sausages.
What’s always in your kitbag?
JAW grips, Thumb tape, Camera phone tripod
What advice would you give to a Master just starting out in CrossFit?
Get mobile – amass at least 10 minutes in a deep squat every day. You will have days that make you feel 90 but you will also have days that will make you feel 20! But just keep moving!
What’s the key to effective recovery for you?
Run, yoga, Coffee, eating.
Pain is Weakness leaving the body.
What would you advise CrossFitters to stop doing?
Looking for goals in the mirror. Look for the incremental goals that come from learning the skills. Perfecting a lift or flying to the top of a muscle up is far more rewarding. The aesthetic gains happen as a side effect.
What should they start (if they aren’t already!)?
Get out and run – so primal but so effective! Look up Chris Hinshaw’s running workouts they will teach you to respect running and learn more about your own aerobic capacity than you thought possible.
What are you most excited about right now?
Finally finding a way to mix my design and marketing “day Job” skills with my passion for fitness in launching my own coffee brand Intensus Coffee.
