Supplement Throwdown! ZMA -v- Magnesium Shots

At 48, I don’t recover like I did when I was 20; there’s no getting away from that fact.

Anyone who trains hard needs to think about their recovery, and that is amplified for Masters athletes. Recovery can involve taking a rest day, eating properly, supplementing, working on ‘hotspots’ or sleeping properly. The latter is probably the single most important thing we do to recover.

During sleep we repair muscles and bring our hormones back into balance. What can we do to maximise our sleep? There is a huge amount of advice available for modern insomniacs – from removing sources of light from the bedroom to going to bed earlier, but this blog post is about supplements that claim to help in the process. I’m going to compare two that I’ve used recently, ZMA and Magnesium Shots.

From the interviews in  the “Meet the Masters” series, many of us take either ZMA or Magnesium supplements before bed.

At the time of writing…

Magnesium: Maria Blumenthal & Christian Loyer

ZMA: Kim Lole & Spencer Whiteley
